Crime Stoppers

The University of Miami Police Department has formed a partnership with Crime Stoppers of Miami-Dade to empower the University community with another proactive crime prevention tool.

Crime Stoppers of Miami-Dade is an organization dedicated to assisting law enforcement in solving crimes by proving an anonymous and profitable means for individuals with knowledge of crimes to share their information with police.  Anonymity is a critical aspect of the program, and the reporting systems have been specifically designed to assure identities are never revealed.  Cash rewards are paid to individuals, through the use of a confidential tip number issued at the time of reporting, who provide information that leads to the filing of criminal charges against offenders and the capture of fugitives.

In addition to promoting the standard means of anonymously reporting tips, such as via phone and internet, the University of Miami and Crime Stoppers of Miami-Dade are excited to introduce “Text Tipping", a completely new and even quicker way to report information about a crime on campus. It is still 100 percent safe and 100 percent anonymous.  The text messaging system masks your identity by applying an encrypted alias to your text message; no one will know who you are.

To report information via phone:

  • Call 305-471-TIPS (8477)
    • This phone is a stand-alone instrument which does not provide caller ID, and conversations are not recorded. The Crime Stoppers Coordinator receiving the information completes the tips information form, makes initial inquiries and then passes the information to the investigating officer.

To report information via the internet:

  • Visit crimestoppersmiami.com, click on the "Give A Tip" icon, and follow the instructions.
    • Email tips are not accepted.

To report information via text message:

  • Open your cell phone's TXT MSG window
  • Select TXT MSG: In the TO window type: 274637 (crimes). Select OK.
  • In the text window type: tips139. Then in the same text window, type the details of the crime you have information about. (Do not include your contact info or name; you will remain anonymous.)
  • Select SEND. You will receive a confirmation text with your control number. Please allow two to four weeks before you follow up with a similar text and your anonymous control number for status of your case.
