Bicycle/ Scooter Safety and Registration

Bicycle and Scooter Registration and Lock Program

Registration on the Coral Gables campus is mandatory. U-Locks and registrations are provided to all bicycle and scooter owners by UMPD. To register your device and receive your free lock, simply click here or on the link below. Sign in using your University of Miami credentials, and complete the form with a photo upload of your device. After you have done this, come to the UMPD station, which is located on the first floor of the Flipse Building, to pick up your lock and registration sticker.

If your bicycle or scooter is ever lost, stolen, or confiscated for non-compliance with the University guidelines, registration will aid UM Police in locating and returning your bicycle/ scooter. Anyone affiliated with the University in any way may purchase a discounted lock for $20.00, payable by check or money order.

Bicycle/ Scooter Registration

Red-Lock Program

The objective of the program is to eliminate the presence of unattended or unsecured bicycles and scooters making for fewer "easy targets" for thieves to steal. UMPD as a matter of practice will lock non-secured bikes and scooters as they are encountered. Should this happen to you, you will need to contact UMPD to have the bicycle or scooter unlocked.

Abandoned Bicycle/ Scooter Confiscation Program

UMPD does confiscate abandoned bicycles and scooters. Call UMPD for more information about our process for removing bikes and scooters abandoned on campus.

Bicycle Laws and Safety

In the state of Florida, bicycles are legally defined as vehicles. Cyclists must obey the same traffic laws as other drivers. Pedestrians must be given the right of way. Cyclists should follow these guidelines. More than 70 percent of bicycle-related fatalities are the result of head injuries, please wear your helmet.

Bicycle and Scooter Safety Tips

  • At night, always wear light-colored clothing and make sure you have an illuminated headlight and taillight—it's state law.
  • Ride with traffic. Don't ride against the flow of traffic.
  • All bicycles and scooters used, kept, or otherwise on the Coral Gables campus are required by University policy to be officially registered with UMPD and secured whenever not in use at a designated rack with a UMPD issued U-lock. Bicycles and scooters in violation of this policy are subject to being secured and/or impounded. UMPD registration stickers and U-locks are free of charge.

Micromobility Update

Electronic scooters, e-bikes, hoverboards, electric skateboards, and other motorized micromobility devices are no longer permitted on the Coral Gables campus. These devices are not to be operated, parked, stored, charged, or brought into buildings on campus property. Electronic scooters will be impounded or locked if identified on campus. Scooters should still be registered with the University of Miami Police Department. Additional information is available on the Micromobility FAQ webpage.

Micromobility devices may be used to commute to campus but must be parked and secured in one of the designated perimeter locations:

Brescia Shuttle Stop (Gray Lot 716)
Liguria Shuttle Stop (Gray Lot 721)
Ponce de Leon Boulevard, across from the Metrorail Station

Devices are not permitted to be parked, stored, or secured anywhere else on campus.
